How soon will I receive my order?
Everything is made to order in our studio in Corvallis, Montana. Our current turnaround time is 1-2 weeks, and most orders then ship in 5-8 business days via USPS Ground Advantage. You'll receive a tracking number when your order ships.
What is your return and exchange policy?
Returns and exchanges are free within 30 days. Use our returns portal below to print a prepaid return label at no cost to you. Refunds cover the price of your item; original shipping charges aren't refunded. Need a different size? Exchanges on eligible items are always free. We want your little one's shoes to fit just right.
Sale items: items purchased at 20% off or more, whether marked down or with a discount code (including Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales), can be exchanged or returned for store credit (issued as a gift card), but aren't eligible for refunds.
Final sale (no returns or exchanges):
- Women's, men's and big kids' shoes (because of the amount of leather and time each pair takes, please measure carefully and contact us with fit questions before ordering)
- Seasonal and holiday items
- Discontinued items
- Items marked final sale, including Random Ready to Ship sales
- Custom items, special orders and special requests
- Narrow widths or other alterations
- Shoes with added Big Runner soles
- Items returned after 30 days
Items must be unused and in their original packaging. Returns that don't follow these guidelines will be sent back and not processed. If you're unsure whether your item qualifies, email us your order number at orders@starryknightdesign.com. See our full refund policy for details.
If your item is eligible, use our returns portal below to get your free label. Refunds are issued 1-3 business days after we receive your return.
What size should I order?
Ages are just an estimate, so measuring is the best way to find the right size. Measure your baby's or child's foot on a flat, hard surface, then add 3/8" for wiggle room and room to grow (a little less for narrow feet, a little more for wide feet). That gives you the sole length to look for in our size chart. Sole lengths are measured from the outside of the shoe. Not sure which size to choose? We're always happy to help. Reach out or email hello@starryknightdesign.com with your child's foot measurement and the style you're looking at, and we'll help you find the perfect fit. And if the size still isn't quite right, exchanges are free.
What sizes do you make?
Our standard sizes run from 00 (tiny) through 12-13, about newborn to 6 years. Big kids', women's and men's sizes are offered one week each month and are final sale, so please measure before ordering.
Are soft sole shoes good for babies learning to walk?
Yes. Flexible soft soles let little feet bend and grip naturally, and our non-slip suede soles help with balance while crawling, standing and taking first steps.
Will the shoes stay on my baby's feet?
Every style has an elastic ankle that keeps shoes (and socks) on, even on the squirmiest newborns.
Can the shoes be worn outside?
Our soft sole shoes are made for indoor, crib and daycare wear. For outdoor wear, add our Big Runner rubber sole to your order (available on sizes 3 and up).
Are your shoes made in the USA?
Yes. Every pair is handmade to order in small batches in Montana by our team of local women. Starry Knight Design is a woman-owned business, making shoes since 2008.
Do your shoes make a good gift?
Our shoes are a favorite baby shower, first birthday and holiday gift. Gift cards are also available.
Where can I buy your shoes locally or in a store near me?
Our handmade baby shoes are carried by boutiques and gift shops, and our list of retailers changes often. Please contact us directly for current retailers in your area.

How do coupon codes work?
Coupon codes must be entered at checkout. We can't add a discount after purchase, and only one discount can be used per order. Thanks for understanding!
What if my package is lost, stolen or sent to the wrong address?
If a package is lost, stolen, delayed more than two weeks after shipping, or sent to an incorrect address, we'll do what we can to help you locate, replace or refund it. We aren't responsible for items once they've shipped via USPS Ground Advantage, so please double-check your address before placing your order. Thanks so much!
What are the differences in the leathers?
Every pair is made from real leather uppers with soft, non-slip suede soles. Here's how our leathers compare, grouped by type.
Dakota Multi-Tone Pebbled (Barley/Flax, Chai, Chestnut, Latte, Navy, Russet/Sepia, Sable, Sahara/Oat)
Pebbled with a protective top coating. Soft and thick, 3.5 oz, with a soft temper. Holds up to a good amount of wear.
Pebbled (Beige, Big Sky, Black, Camel, Cherry, Cream, Daffodil, Gray, Honey, Milk, Oyster, Powder Blue, Rose Blush, Sienna, Tea Green, White)
Durable, thick 3.5 oz leather that's soft and holds up to wear. Pebbled leathers have a shiny top coating that can wear off if toes are dragged across carpet, cement or wood. This is true of any pebbled leather, which is what almost every baby shoe company uses.
Euro Smooth (Dusty Rose, Lichen, Papaya)
Smooth finish that holds up well to some wear. Soft temper, slightly thinner leather, 3 oz.
American Hand Rubbed (Tumbleweed, Rhubarb)
USA hides, finished in the USA. Super soft with a mostly smooth finish and hand-painted coloring, so every hide looks a little different. 3-3.5 oz with a soft temper. The finish holds up to some wear. Very special hides!
Distressed American Waxed (Rust, Weathered Wood)
Thinner 3 oz leather with a softer temper and distressed character. Holds up well to wear while staying soft.
Shiny Italian (Caramel, Saddle)
Thinner 3 oz leather with a smooth, shiny sealed finish and a slightly distressed look. Slightly stiff, and holds up well to wear.
Waxed Finish (Iron)
High-quality leather with a waxed finish. Soft, thick 3.5 oz with a smooth finish. Can be treated with conditioner to bring color and moisture back to the leather.
Some colors go by two names in our listings: Barley and Flax, Russet and Sepia, and Sahara and Oat are the same leathers. Leather is a natural material, so color and texture can vary a little from hide to hide. See our leather color chart to compare shades.
